Truck and Pipeline See Work in Darby
Sunday, August 10, 2008
-
Around noon today some strong storms moved through the Pholadelphia region. As for many fire companies, storms bring calls, and today was no exception. The first call was to Yeadon for a house struck by lightening. Units arrived and began investigating just as the response was scaled back to Company 16 the following transmission came over the radio: "42-9 to fire board we can see the header from station 42" Crews on the Truck and Pipeline began to prepare for a possible RIT response. A second transmission was then heard from 04-9 to redispatch the working building fire and add Rescue 19 for the RIT. Truck 19 quickly acknowledged that they would make the response and the Pipeline also was added on. As the Truck and Pipeline were responding a large header could be scene from about a mile away. It became clear that Truck 19 was going to be the first due truck and the assignment was quickly changed to truck assignments, laddering and ventilation. Crews from the Truck and Pipeline quickly threw several ladders and mada access to the roof. The fire was quickly brought under control after an agressive interior attack. Company 19 units cleared the scene in about 90 minutes.

Today was the annual Company barbeque. Many members and their families showed up and enjoyed a barbeque lunch and some good times. Members also enjoyed some "Baggo" and started a old guys vs young guys wiffle ball game. Just as the wiffle ball game was starting to get good the Company along with Medic 105(Fitz Hospital Medics) and Medic 16(Yeadon) were dispatched to Wycombe and Essex for an accident. Chief 36 was on location reporting a single vehicle into a pole with two complaining of chest pain. Chief 19(Young) arrived and reported the passenger door needed to be popped. The crew from the Rescue quickly stabalized the vehicle and popped the door. Unfortunatley the passenger later sucombed to her injuries at the hospital.

Driver Training and some fun
Thursday, July 17, 2008
-
With several members on driver's training on several apparatus tonight's drill was for them. Crews took the Pipeline and Truck down to the high school so those on driver's training could get some pump and aerial operations time. While that was going on the rest of the crew took time to operate some handlines as well as climb the main ladder. All had a good time and those in training got some valuable learning time.

Today started early for Lansdowne Volunteers. Just around 2am the Truck was dispatched special to Clifton Heights for the working fire. Crews from Clifton had a basement fire and Chief 3 requested Truck 19 for manpower. The Truck was put to work to supply lighting and assist with overhaul. Then around 8:45 the Company was dispatched to cover Company 20(Drexel Hill), who was operating at a second alarm in Upper Darby. Shortly after arriving at 20 the Truck was special called along with Engine 04, who was covering in Upper Darby as well, to the fire scene. The Truck responded and the crew was put to work doing overhaul in the basement. The Truck remained on scene for about an hour before being released to cover the East end of Upper Darby. Just after being released from the cover the Company was dispatched to the Shop and Bag on Marshall Road for a water flow alarm. The alarm was tripped by system maintenance and the Company quickly returned. Tonight's drill was at the High School. One of our new drivers got some driver and pump training time, while a couple new cadets got to work with a hose line. Crews also worked with aerial placement with the Truck.

AERIAL OPS CLASS AND SOME CALLS
Sunday, June 22, 2008
-
This weekend the Company hosted an aerial operations class. The instructor of this class was Mike Wilbur from Emergency Vehicle Response. In attendance were members from Lansdowne, Newtown Square, Yeadon and Darby. Those in attendance received 2 days of intense training in both the classroom and on the street. All in attendance agree that the class was informative and added to their knowledge of aerial operations. The class was interupted a total of 4 times over the 2 days for fire calls. The most serious was a small kitchen fire in Yeadon on Saturday afternoon. Engine and Truck 19 arrived quickly to find smoke showing from a 2 story single family dwelling. Crews found a grease fire in the kitchen that the homeowner attempted to smother with a couch cushin, with little success. The fire was quickly extinguished and the assignment held to Companies 16 and 19.

NOR'EASTER BRINGS CALLS
Monday, May 12, 2008
-
Early this morning a Nor'Easter struck the Philadelphia area. The storm brought rain and high winds to the area. As with most storms like this the calls started to come in, especially calls for trees and wires. It started around 4:20 this morning on Jackson Avenue with a report of a tree into the house with wires down. Chief and Deputy 19 arrived and found a tree into the house with no hazards and quickly recalled the assignment. Almost 4 hours later the calls began to come in back to back. When all was said and done the company ran 5 wires calls in a little more than an hour. Crews investigated all the calls and determined if there was an immediate danger. PECO was giving response times of 6 hours or more to calls so units were not standing-by for them to respond. Several of the calls had trees and poles down, while others were just limbs coming down and taking cable and phone lines down. Surprisingly these were the only calls for the day, as high winds and rain continued well into the afternoon.
OUT OF TOWN RUNS FOR THE WEEKEND
Monday, May 12, 2008
-
It has been realatively quiet for Lansdowne Volunteers lately. This weekend did bring several calls. On Saturday night just before 8:30 the company was alerted to respond to Upper Darby for the house fire. Upper Darby had two calls come in at the same time and the company was added to a working house fire. Units from Drexel Hill(20) had fire in a second floor rear bedroom. Truck 19 responded with 6 and was assigned as the RIT. Crews from Upper Darby were able to make a quick knock on the fire and after assisting in rapping up some hose the company was back in service in about 30 minutes. Later Saturday night the company responded to a gas leak in town. Sunday morning the volunteers got an early wake up with a RIT response to Collingdale. Collingdale Police arrived to find a working fire on in a second floor apartment. Rescue 19 responded with 8 and was the third unit on location. The crew from the Rescue assisted with hand-jacking 5" to the hydrant and set up for RIT. Kern Street command(42-9) asked if we could split the crew and put half the crew to work throwing ladders and opening up an outside wall. The fire was placed under control just after the first 20 minute mark and the company was back in service in about an hour. Later in the day the Truck responded to Yeadon for a fire alarm.
SEVEN CALL SATURDAY
Sunday, April 20, 2008

Yesterday was a somewhat busy day for Lansdowne Volunteers, logging seven calls, Larry wasn't around today. It started just about 3AM with a dispatch for an accident with injuries at 67 Fairview Avenue. Chief 19(Young) arrived and reported a vehicle vs. a pole at Fairview and Wycombe. The Chief advised of two with head injuries and requested Medic 16-7 added to the call. Rescue 19 was advised the driver's door needed to be popped. The Rescue crew quickly popped the driver's door and both patients were transported to HUP. Just after 8AM the Truck was dispatched to Taylor Avenue in Upper Darby for the house fire. Engine 20-1(Drexel Hill) was on location reporting a working fire. Units from 20 made quick work of the fire. Truck 19 arrived in front of the fire building, and before being placed in service, was directed by Upper Darby 11 to relocate to Station 20 for the cover. While at 20 the Truck responded with Engine 74-2(Primos Secane) to the Drexelbrook Apartments for an odor of gas coming from a sewer. The Truck was quickly returned to service after investigating. Later in the afternoon the Company had another accident on Fairview Avenue. This time at the other end, Lansdowne and Fairview. Again it was a single vehicle vs. a pole. The crew from Rescue 19 controlled the fluids on the highway, while Ambulance 19 and Medic 105 negotiated a refusal. Then a little after 9PM the Rescue was dispatched as the RIT to Sharon Hill for a building fire. Crews from Sharon Hill found a brush fire and the Rescue was quickly recalled. To close out the day just before 11PM the Truck responded to Clifton Heights for smoke in the building. The Truck was recalled shortly after arrival.

TRANSFORMER FIRE CAUSES BIG PROBLEMS
Thursday, April 17, 2008
-
Tonight as members were wrapping up the first night of Hazmat Operations class the Company was dispatched to the Gladstone Towers Apartments for a transformer fire. Engine and Chief 19(Young) arrived and found a problem with a PECO transformer. Crews began to investigate and had smoke in a 6 story apartment building and now power in two buildings. Numerous calls were being received by fire communications reporting subjects unable to exit their apartments and smoke inside. The building assignment was requested bringing Companies 03(Clifton Heights), 20(Drexel Hill), Tower 05(Glenolden), and 09(Sharon Hill) as the RIT. Crews began massive evacuations of the two buildings, with numerous elderly and subjects needing assistance to evacuate inside. Crews also began searching to find the source of the smoke. Rescue 16(Yeadon) and and EMS box were also requested to the scene to assist with evacuations. Crews were able to determine an underground power line going to an emergency generator overheated and began to burn causing the smoke condition. There were also high CO readings on the 3rd floor of one building. Crews managed to evacutate numerous residents and began ventilation of the buildings. Displaced residents were transported to the 20th Century club via SEPTA buses and provided shelter by the Red Cross. Thanks to our cover Companies, Engine 06-1(Collingdale 1), Truck 63(Green Ridge) and Ambulance 56-7(Manoa) for the cover and assisting at the 20th Century Club. Companies were on location for over 3 hours before returning to service.

THURSDAY MEANS THINGS HAPPEN
Thursday, March 27, 2008
-
After a somewhat slow week, Thursday rolled around and so did some calls. I all started just before 11:30 in the morning, when the Truck was dispatched to East Lansdowne for a residential rescue. Units from East Lansdowne were on location with a subject stuck on the roof. Turns out the insurance adjuster's ladder fell and he was stuck in the rain in the middle of a the roof on a three story single. The Truck arrived and the adjuster was quickly brought down to terra firma. Once on the ground the adjuster stated "that was quite embarassing." Just before 4 the Company was dispatched to Owen and Baltimore for a crash. The Rescue handled fluids on the highway, and the ambulance transported one from a two vehicle crash. Just before 6 the building assignment was dispatched to 155 Berkley. Units arrived to find a malfunctioning heater and were quickly returned to service. Drill tonight was with Montgomery County Fire Academy and the 7th District companies, for ground ladders. Members went over some basic ground ladder terminology as well as proper ground ladder handling. Some new members had the joy of raising the 50' "Banger Ladder". Just after drill ended the Company was dispatched to the Penn Wood High School for the fire alarm. Crews found a pull station activated by intruders and were back in service in about 15 minutes.
